Summer Workshop in Computational Science and Bioinformatics
June 30 - July 11, 2008
The Center for Computational Research, UB's supercomputing center, will sponsor an intensive two-week summer workshop in computational science for local high-school students. This year's program will focus on computational biology and bioinformatics. Participating students should have completed their sophomore, junior or senior year, should have taken courses in Chemistry and Biology, and should know some computing; students do not need extensive programming backgrounds. The workshop will provide students with experience in computational bioscience on state-of-the-art computing and visualization hardware.
This workshop is held annually in honor of Eric Pitman, who was a freshman at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute when he passed away on February 27, 2007 after a brief illness. A Science Olympiad participant at St. Gregory the Great Elementary School, Eric was an avid reader, a young man who enjoyed learning new things and challenging his thinking about the world and his place within it.
One of his teachers spoke of Eric by saying: "It seemed that he always did the right thing, and always stood by what he knew was morally and ethically correct. He was a tremendous leader, a silent leader who led by example and not by talk."
It is with Eric's sense of wonderment and inquisitiveness in mind that the workshop strives to introduce students into the application of computer modeling and simulation to solve important problems in science and engineering.
Interested students should forward the following information to the Center at the address below:
- High school transcript
- Letter of recommendation from a science teacher
- Brief summary of science background (biology, chemistry, physics, etc)
- Brief summary of experience with computing (programming courses, languages, etc)
Please indicate also any computer and programming experience that you have, and report SAT or PSAT scores if available.
Application materials are due April 25, 2008.
The Workshop will be held at the Center for Computational Research in the Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics building on the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus in downtown Buffalo. The Center is one of the leading academic supercomputing sites in the United States. The program will begin at 9:30 each morning; and will usually end by 3:30. Lunch will be provided; students should arrange for their own transportation. On Friday, July 11 students will give presentations for parents, teachers and guests at CCR.
